United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) vice presidential bet Senator Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan II today condemned the barbaric beheading of Canadian hostage victim John Ridsdel.
Honasan said the death of Mr. Ridsdel from the hands of his captors, the Abu Sayyaf bandits, is another unfortunate incident that Filipinos here and abroad are going to endure and suffer later on.
“I hope our government, including our future leaders, as the campaign nears its end to give way to the May 9 elections, will eventually make a clear stand on how we should address problems like the Abu Sayyaf,” Honasan said.
He added: “We cannot go on like this forever. Local and foreign tourists and residents should be guaranteed security and safety. This is another very unfortunate incident and I condemn the display of no value for life.”
Ridsdel, together with Robert Hall, Filipina Marites Flor, and Norwegian Kjartan Sekkingstad, were forcibly taken by 10 armed men carrying M16 assault rifles while on vacation at the Holiday Ocean View Marina in Samal Island, Davao del Norte in September 21.
Honasan likewise challenged the public anew to study the background and track records of candidates in the 2016 elections, noting that it is only during crisis and trying times that the true character of a leader can be tested.
“This is what we offer. Vice President Jojo Binay and I, promise for a country that is secure and free from this regrettable incident. One life is precious and this kind of senseless killing should be prevented by eliminating the causes of this barbaric groups and its root causes; poverty and social injustice” Honasan said.
