Senator Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan II today affirmed his support for the Senate Presidency bid of fellow veteran Senator Vicente Sotto III.
Honasan said he has formed an alliance with his other colleagues in the Senate who are supportive of the bid of Senator Sotto.
He said the group’s advocacies are similar to the proposed programs of the incoming administration of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte.
Honasan said their group will not obstruct but would rather push an independent and strong Senate institution that would fiscalize and observe the principle of check and balance between the administrative and legislative branches of governnment.
“Hindi obstructionist, kundi itinataguyod ang isang independent at matatag na Senado para makapag -fiscalize at manatili ang prinsipyo ng checks and balances sa isang functioning democracy kahit sino man ang mahalal na Senate President ng majority of senators,” he added.
He likewise said their group is strong and united. However, he conceded that their strength will only be validated on the day of the voting for the new Senate leadership.
Honasan and Sotto are now considered as senior members of the senate spending their tenure as Senators for almost two decades. They are known close friends inside and outside the session hall and supporting each other with their separate campaigns during the last elections.
